Peabody School Committee Debates Kindergarten Cutoff Date, Pushes Decision to November

PEABODY — October 20, 2023 — Peabody School Committee delays kindergarten enrollment cutoff review while approving $1.09 million in warrants. The committee, acting under Chair Joseph Amico in the mayor's absence, approved Warrant No. 5510 for $967,984 and Warrant No. 5513 for $121,618.55, both subject to audit, while hearing from West Memorial Elementary School students and a preview performance of Peabody Veterans Memorial High School's upcoming production of "Mamma Mia." Residents Emily and Paul Delari of 225 Bartholomew Street appeared for the second consecutive month urging reconsideration of the district's 20-year-old September 1 kindergarten enrollment cutoff, noting it had been left off the agenda despite a prior commitment to include it. Member Scott Hockman moved to require Superintendent Dr. Vidal to convene relevant educators before November 28, then withdrew the motion after members agreed Vidal should survey kindergarten and early childhood staff internally and report to the Quality and Standards Subcommittee. The student advisory council's co-president identified a fundraising barrier: school class organizations cannot accept Venmo payments while independent booster clubs can, prompting Hockman to direct Business Manager Mr. Rippon to appear at the November 14 meeting with concrete electronic payment solutions. Member Christine Dunn informed the student council that it is currently three members short of the five required by Massachusetts state law, with a fully seated council entitled to seat a student chairperson at every School Committee meeting.
