PEABODY — The Peabody City Council sustained the mayor's veto of a sidewalk snow-removal ordinance on a 6-4 roll call vote. Councilor Peach, the measure's sponsor, needed eight votes to override and fell four short; Daigle, Welton and Rossignol joined her in favor. Council President Michael Higgins said he would not back an ordinance that's "seemingly tough to enforce, almost unenforceable." In the same meeting, councilors voted 10-0 to revoke the Class 2 motor vehicle license of Mandelitas Auto Repair over $11,711.20 in unpaid property taxes, and unanimously approved an entertainment license for Fogo de Chão's new North Shore Mall location.
Bartholomew Street residents testified about chronic speeding, prompting Captain Scott Richards to report 19 crashes there over five years and councilors to order new signage, a speed-reader relocation and a crosswalk study.
