PEABODY — The Peabody City Council voted 11-0 to double the mattress and box-spring disposal fee from $20 to $40 and sent Salem and Beverly's mattress ordinances to Community Development for review of curbside pickup contracts. Councilor Gamache said the city spent more than $59,000 last year on mattress disposal, partly because residents were reselling $20 city stickers to haul mattresses for up to $100 a pickup. The council also adopted a new tax title payment plan ordinance after City Treasurer Teitelbaum said 94 parcels, worth about $2.3 million, are currently in tax title.
Councilors approved $221,000 in easement payments for the next phase of the Independence Greenway bike path, a $19.5 million project, and asked the state to approve a "blue smoke" pollution-control system at the Amrize quarry, where Jarrett Temple said the company is still awaiting MassDEP approval.
