Peabody Mayor Opens Cooling Centers as Heat Tops 100 Degrees
With a dangerous heat event driving temperatures above 100 degrees across the city, Mayor Peabody officials moved quickly to open cooling centers for residents — while the City Council finalized a new annual trash fee that will hit most households this year.

Separately, road work is affecting travel on Central Street. The Peabody Institute Library's South Branch and West Branch locations are shifting to new hours effective Sunday, July 6. Starting that date, both branches will be open Monday and Tuesday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Wednesday 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Thursday 1 to 9 p.m., and Saturday 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Fridays and Sundays will be closed. Residents who rely on those branches should plan around the new schedule heading into the summer. The Main Library at 82 Main Street continues its current hours, and the Sunday afternoon hours at the Main Library are suspended for the summer through Labor Day.
