Hockey Community Rallies for Family After Mother's Death
Peabody's tight-knit hockey community has organized a fundraising campaign for a local family of three children following the death of a 41-year-old mother, according to a Patch report today, while the city continues preparing its Foster Street planter installations and summer concert series.
TOWN HALL
City Hall's news feed highlights the 41st International Festival, now set for September 27, and the ongoing Summer Concert Series at Leather City Common, which continues to draw residents downtown with free parking. The city also flagged its 30-day public comment period on the annual HUD report and an upcoming public meeting on the Annual CAPER, both administrative processes tied to Peabody's federal housing and community development funding.
Mandatory outdoor water use restrictions remain in effect citywide, and Central Street construction continues to affect traffic patterns and travel through downtown, both carryover issues residents are still adjusting to this week.
SCHOOLS
Peabody Public Schools' calendar shows the district's first professional development day, with no school, falls on August 31, followed by kindergarten screening and the first day of school for grades 1-12 on September 2. Students then get another day off September 4 before Labor Day weekend closes school again September 7.
COMMUNITY & ARTS
The Peabody Institute Library continues its packed summer slate, with weekly children's storytimes running at all three branches and its August 2026 Events Brochure still active for residents planning late-summer visits. The library also promotes its Teen "100 Books Before Graduation" challenge, encouraging high schoolers to log reading on Beanstack for prizes throughout the year.
South and West Branch hours remain on their adjusted summer schedule, effective since July 6: Monday and Tuesday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Wednesday 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Thursday 1 to 9 p.m., and Saturday 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., with both branches closed Fridays and Sundays.
